Work Blog

This was a pretty good week in class. I got to meet new people in my group for proof reading our papers. I'm really excited about this paper because it is written pretty freely. Most papers, you can't write like that. I have high hopes for the next assignment. I think this story will be pretty interesting from the little clip that we watched in class. I always liked reading plays in school too. I am still trying to figure out what I am going to do for an "outside of class" event. The museums around Richmond are pretty awesome so I may do something like that. This is more of a rant this week because I had totally forgotten about doing this blog till about 4 minutes ago. At least I am at work and getting paid to write this right now :)

Taylor Swift concert

This past weekend, my very best friend and I went to Charlottesville, VA to go see one of our favorite performers, Taylor Swift. I know that most people don't like her that are my age, but I have always liked her, and so going to see her for the first time ever was super exciting for me. I will probably forever geek-out over her. No shame!
The show was amazing, and she was definitely better then I had imagined. She interacted with the crowd throughout the show, and made it feel very intimate. You could really tell the appreciation that she has for her fans. There were multiple times where she would talk with the crowd and tell us different things; how she picked where she was going on tour and how/why she writes her songs.
It was really awesome to her here say things that I could relate to about heartbreak and relationships, and just things that we go through in life. I kind of admire her in a way because she is brave enough to put everything she is feeling at specific moments in her life and record them for the world to her. It's like putting your diary out there for everyone to read. I wish that I were that brave. Anyways, I not only had a whole lot of fun there, but I now have a new found respect for one of my favorite artist!

Everything That Rises.. Must get punched in the face!

So the assigned reading "Everything That Rises Must Converge" was not the best story in my opinion. Some parts were humorous, but overall, I could not get into it. Everything else we have read this far has been so much more interesting to me. But, I am going to try and analyze it.
I feel like the mother kind of got what she deserved. I mean, she seemed to be pretty good at making people feel inferior to her, and as such, got a taste of her own medicine. That woman put her in her place, it was well over-due. Now, I do think the circumstances were a little strange. I wouldn't punch someone over a penny, but it was the principle of it. I guess in a way, you could think of it as she was brought up differently and blah blah blah. But there's not excuse for the way she was talking and treating the black people around her. And I felt like her son was just as bad. I felt almost as if he was only trying to befriend black people just in spite of his mother. Almost like a rebellious teenager; make sure to do whatever it is your parents don't want you to do. It was kind of silly, and maybe the reason that he was so bad at approaching them was because they could feel his insensitivity. I don't know.
I wish it wouldn't have ended so abruptly. There were a lot of questions like: Is the mother going to get out of this state of mind? Why is Julian so concerned about her all of a sudden? Did the lady get in trouble for hitting his mother? I guess we will never know. It was fun in class to try and make up your own ending though!

Yellow American Horror Wallpaper Story?

http://beastmodeblogs.blogspot.com/2011/03/bloggers-interpretation-of-yellow.html

So I remember in class on friday when Sweeney mentioned that the show American Horror Story season 1 was semi-based on this story. I think that is why I am so stuck on the supernatural and paranormal idea of it all. Of course, all of the ideas mentioned in class today make sense to me. But I cannot shake that this was all about a woman who was dead and trapped there in the house. I found this blog from a professor online, and he believes it is from a similar idea as well.
I really enjoyed this story so much mostly because I always love a good mystery and haunted house story. My belief is that she was sickly on the way there, and was well on her way to dying. But her doctor/hubby just thought she needed to get out of the city and get more fresh air and other things that don't make sense. OR he could have been poisioning her with the "phosphates/phosphites" that he was giving her on a daily basis and just taking her out to the house to make her think he was doing something nice for her. yeah... I just thought of that! So anyways, this house is clearly haunted. I mean, she is pretty much seeing "figures" since day one. And the fact that there were multiple figures at times make me think that there were others that lived and died there, and are now trapped and stay there forever. Maybe the rope was the exact length that she could go outside before finding herself back in that room again? hmmm. Well, I'm not sure what else I could say to back up my opinion about this, but I had a lot of fun reading this story and disecting it. :)
sidenote: I cannot wait till the new season of AHS comes out. I'm such a geek for this show. That is probably the reason why my analysis of this story is pretty much season one. yup!
